How Often Do My Gutters Really Need to be Cleaned?

Annual gutter cleaning is essential to maintaining water flow towards downspouts. When leaves, twigs and debris clog your gutters, the flow of water is obstructed and will accumulate and create pressure, ultimately causing damage to the gutters and water damage to your home when the accumulation begins to break free.

Water can also penetrate the soil around the perimeter of your home, causing erosion and thereby putting the foundation at risk when water enters through small cracks. The water will eventually flow back out of the cracks, and so will little pieces of the foundation. If this goes on for an extended length of time, leaks will occur—mold, mildew and bacteria will appear.

An even greater problem develops when water leaks into the soil under the foundation of your house. Imagine your home falling into a humongous sinkhole you could have easily avoided with annual gutter cleaning!
